There are two ferries that service Zamami and Aka from Naha: the Queen Zamami 3 and Ferry Zamami. Both leave from Tomari port, on highway 58 in western Naha. Mitsu-shima is a small passenger speedboat that runs between Aka and Zamami four times daily.
You'll want to make a reservation if you are taking the Queen during a busy time (Golden Week, summer weekends). To do that, call 098-868-4567. The staff will speak very limited English, so speaking slowly will make it easier for them.
You will pay for your tickets on the day you travel. While you can make reservations beforehand, you cannot purchase tickets ahead of time.
Inclement Weather Warning: The ferries are occasionally canceled due to high waves. This will happen sporadically throughout the year, though more so during typhoon season (spring and early fall) and winter. Please be sure to check the weather before your trip as there is a possibility you could be stranded on Zamami if a typhoon blows in. The ferry staff at the ticket counter (in Naha) will try to warn you if bad weather is coming, but it is not their responsibility to do so and you will be unable to get a refund on your ticket should you get stuck on Zamami. However, you can change your ticket reservation to the next available boat and you will only incur a fee if you're upgrading a Ferry Zamami ticket to a Queen Zamami ticket. If you do end up on Zamami during a ferry cancelation you can ask the ticket office to issue you a ferry cancelation voucher which can be used to help facilitate changing your airline reservation.
The wave forecast can be found on this website: http://www.imocwx.com/cwm.htm The site is in Japanese, but the date format is easy: year:month:day:time. Click on the links to the right (南日本) and you'll find Okinawa in the lower half, just left of center. Blue is good, red is bad.
Note: while you cannot get a refund on a ferry ticket, you can change your reservation by taking your unused ticket to the ticket counter. The ticket offices are pretty flexible about changing reservations/tickets so long as there is free space.
Queen Zamami 3
The Queen is a passenger ferry that runs twice daily, except three times daily during peak season (Golden Week, July, August). Please check the fare chart lower down on this page for ticket prices. This boat will be canceled during rough weather (3+ meter seas). Please call the ticket office (098-868-4567) or check the website to confirm the schedule on the day you want to travel.
